About LORRF: The Legends of Rasta Reggae Festival Tour

(Formerly the Annual Bob Marley Festival Tour)

The Origins

The journey began in the late 1960s when Sirron Kyles, Founder and Executive Producer, was introduced to Bob Marley and Joe Higgs. In 1971, Kyles helped promote Marley’s first Houston performance at the Majestic Theater. Despite Bob being relatively unknown then, the show was a spiritual success, though many who missed it still express regret today. This “missed opportunity” inspired Kyles to dedicate his career to promoting messengers of love through reggae and world beat music.
In 1981, following Marley’s passing, Kyles co-produced the first “Bob Marley Day Celebration” at Fitzgerald’s in Houston. Recognizing a lack of professional organization in the reggae festival circuit, he developed a unique production concept that blended world-class entertainment with non-profit involvement.
A Mission of Service
Since 1991, the Festival has maintained a powerful tradition: asking fans for non-perishable food donations in lieu of admission. This initiative has been a resounding success:
Impact: Generated over $1.8 million in cash and nearly 2 million pounds of food.
Reach: Collections now include school supplies and books for communities inside and outside the U.S.
Philosophy: Promoting the “Rastafarian Philosophy” of peace, unity, and cultural awareness.
Evolution and Resilience
The Festival eventually transitioned from the “Bob Marley Festival Tour” to the Legends of Rasta Reggae Festival (LORRF). This change followed a licensing dispute with the Marley family and successful legal battles to protect the festival’s intellectual property from former associates.
Despite challenges—including the aftermath of 9/11, economic shifts, and major hurricanes like Katrina and Harvey—LORRF has remained a resilient force in the industry. As corporate attitudes toward reggae and cannabis culture have modernized, the festival has seen a resurgence in sponsorship and investor interest.
LORRF 2023: The “Love You” Theme
The 2023 tour, themed “Love You,” celebrates the women of reggae and world beat music. This year’s core lineup features a mix of legendary female acts and emerging stars, supported by local talent and family-friendly activities.
With a diverse Food Court and a unique Arts & Crafts Market, LORRF continues to offer an experience that fans say “other festivals just can’t match.” We invite you to join us in spreading love and lending a helping hand to those in need.
Our Mission: To provide food for the hungry and help for the homeless.
